How to Find a Job in Federal Dentistry

2 min read

As we all know, being a dentist doesn’t necessarily mean you will be stuck in one practice from the day you qualify to the day you retire. Many dentists change from one area of dentistry to another to keep their interest in the industry fresh and improve their wide range of skills by working in a different capacity. One of these dental jobs to consider is working in Federal Dentistry.3

As of 2016, there are approximately 5,000 dentists who work on behalf of the U.S. Public Health Service, aswell as the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The military is also included in this figure. This 5,000 number was gathered in a recent study by the ADA Center for Professional Success. There are many excellent benefits available in Federal Dentistry such as, but not limited to:

  • Acompetitive base salary.
  • Excellent access tosome non-taxable earnings, aswell as associated benefits.
  • An excellent progression to higher pay scales and benefits as you grow in experience.
  • Opportunity to complete a residency or take part in a specialty program.
  • Ability to take part in some continuing education credits which will enable the dentist to increase their skills.

The vast majority of us will be relatively familiar with the role of the military and the VA (more commonly known as the US Department of Veteran Affairs), you may be less inclined to know about the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, which play a vital job which often goes unrecognized.

So, lets tell you a little bit about these fantastic individuals. The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps tend to be full officers, with dental experience. You will see them in a variety of places such as the Coast Guard, the FBI, Prisons, to name but a few.The uniforms that these officers wear are similar to those adorned by the Navy, but the Commissioned Corps are actually under control of the Health and Human Services department rather than the Defense department. While the service tends not to be armed, Commissioned Corps will have the chance to lend a hand in public health rapid response teams, aswell as reacting to any natural disasters that may take place. A good perk of this job is that these Commissioned Corps are privy to the same benefits as those who take part in active service.3

In order to become a member of the Commissioned Corps, it is necessary for you to complete an online application. Then, you will be invited to take part in an interview where you can showcase your skills and experiences. Make sure that you prepare adequately for the interview by drafting some responses to commonly asked questions. If accepted, you will have the unique opportunity to join the Commissioned Corps. It is a truly rewarding career which tends to have excellent retention rates because employees are so content and happy. So, if you are looking for a new start, Federal Dentistry could be your ideal job in the Dental Industry.
